Learn more about V'Ahavta
One of Judaism’s most powerful prayers begins with:
“Sh’ma Yisrael, Hashem Elokainu, Hashem Echad” שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָד׃ –
Defined As:
Hear, O Israel, the L-rd is our G‑d, the L-rd is One.
The following paragraph begins with:
וְאָהַבְתָּ אֵת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּכָל־לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל־נַפְשְׁךָ וּבְכָל־מְאֹדֶךָ
‘And you shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your might”.
V’ahavta also reminds us, not only to love God with all our hearts, souls, and might, but also to love our friend/neighbor as ourselves.
A well-known pillar of Judaism is וְאהבת לרעך כמוך; Defined as, ”Love your friend/neighbor as yourself”. To love God, and one another, are the very foundations, literally the essence, of the Jewish faith.
Learn more about Chasdei Hashem
Denotes the unlimited loving-kindness with which God created the world and which a permeates all creations. As the verse states, “Olam Chesed Yibaneh"
"The world was built with chesed" (Tehilim 89:3).
Unlike the well-known phrase, Baruch Hashem, (blessed is God), Chasdei Hashem (the kindness or benevolence of G-d) is slightly different.
For example, someone asks a co-worker, "How are you this morning?”; and you
answer” I’m fine, thank you, Baruch Hashem".
As compared to someone asks: How are you today?
And you answer “Oy, my car wouldn’t start this morning, but Chasdei Hashem, my neighbor was still at home and gave my battery a jump, so I was able to get to work on time."
